Empowering Vulnerable Children Through Literacy
Mission Statement
Project Potyra's mission is to inspire, train, and empower children and youth through education, culture, and social inclusion, fostering justice and transformation in marginalized communities.
History and Achievements
Founded in 1990, Project Potyra Albuquerque has served children and teens in Paudalho and the rural district of Chã do Conselho, offering educational support, arts programming, and community engagement. Over three decades, the project has reached more than 10,000 youth, emphasizing cultural pride, literacy, and holistic development.
Target Communities
Children and adolescents from low-income families in Paudalho and Chã do Conselho, many of whom attend under-resourced public schools and lack access to extracurricular education, especially in the arts.
The Problem
Functional illiteracy is a persistent issue in Pernambuco, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities. Children often complete early education without mastering reading and writing, leading to academic struggles, low self-esteem, and limited future prospects.
In Paudalho, the lack of access to quality education and the high rate of functional illiteracy perpetuates the cycle of poverty and limits development opportunities. Local data shows that 21.1% of the population aged 15 and older is illiterate, exceeding state and national averages, and that 35.3% of the adult population faces significant difficulties in reading and writing, characterizing functional illiteracy. These numbers highlight the urgent need for interventions to improve the education of the community’s youth. Our initiative aims to reduce school dropout rates, promote literacy, and enhance academic performance, creating new opportunities for adolescents and positively impacting the future of the community.
Impact on the Community
Low literacy levels reduce children's ability to participate in school, understand public information, or develop creatively. It weakens civic engagement and perpetuates cycles of poverty and marginalization.
From Page to State aims to reduce functional illiteracy rates in the community through consistent and continuous action, providing greater autonomy and quality of life for the beneficiaries. The two-year-long engagement plan for the functional literacy innovation program aims to inspire and empower vulnerable children in Paudalho through reading Brazilian literary texts, creative writing, and public performances. Beginning with text selection, students will delve into comprehension and interpretation, fostering a love for literature. They will then move on to creative writing and script production, embracing their creativity. As the project evolves, students will design scenarios and produce music, culminating in a vibrant public drama performance. Each phase is collaboratively structured, ensuring all students are actively involved in reading, comprehension, and writing, while fostering teamwork and enhancing their literacy skills throughout the year.

Taste of Faith
Community Bakery for Economic Empowerment
Here You've Got Stories is a community initiative committed to proclaiming the gospel playfully and creatively, using storytelling, art, and expression to reach the hearts of children. Rooted in compassion and purpose, our vision is to guide and care for children in vulnerable situations—emotionally, physically, spiritually, and socially. We seek to nurture their character by instilling values, principles, and ethics that will shape their future and positively influence their communities. Through consistent presence, meaningful relationships, and imaginative engagement, we offer a safe space where children are seen, heard, and empowered to become agents of transformation in their families and in society.
The Problem at Hand
Cidade Tabajara, especially the Japão subdivision, is marked by high levels of poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to formal education and economic opportunities. Our project, “Here You’ve Got Stories,” provides psychosocial support, creative education, and a sense of belonging to children and youth from this community. Through our engagement, we identified a pressing economic need among the families—particularly the mothers—most of whom are unemployed or working informally with unpredictable income.
There is a strong cultural tradition of food sharing and celebration in the community. However, the lack of access to capital and training prevents many women from turning their culinary skills into income-generating opportunities. The Taste of Faith Cooperative was born as a response to this challenge: to mobilize the community's cultural and culinary strengths as a source of empowerment and economic justice.
A Cooperative
The 'Taste of Faith' project will establish a community bakery cooperative, providing vocational training and entrepreneurial opportunities to women from disadvantaged backgrounds. The project will include comprehensive training in baking techniques, business management, financial literacy, and cooperative governance, equipping participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate a successful business. Mentorship and ongoing support will be provided to ensure the long-term sustainability of the cooperative.
Goals and Objectives
- Goal: To empower women economically and improve community access to affordable, nutritious baked goods.
